Ask how the reserve is calculated

A metered system normally needs enough reserve capacity to cover water use between the point when regeneration is triggered and the time when regeneration begins. Ask whether the reserve is fixed, based on recent use, or adjustable.

If the controller depends on an app or network connection, ask whether normal softener operation continues without them. Also ask whether all essential settings and diagnostics can be accessed directly at the valve.

Confirm that the meter can be checked

For a metered system, ask the installer to show that the displayed water-use count changes when a softened fixture runs. This provides a simple way to confirm that the meter is registering flow. Also ask what symptom would indicate a failed, obstructed, or disconnected meter.

The manual should explain how to view current flow or accumulated use. Keep the final programmed settings with the equipment records so they can be restored if the controller is replaced or reset.
