METHODOLOGY v2026.07 : applies to report WSR-STL-2026.07 Weights fixed before scoring : sum to 100%
Methodology : Version 2026.07

How we score: criteria, weights, and the 0-10 scale.

A rating is only useful if you can see how it was built. This page documents the five criteria, the exact weights, the scoring scale bands, the on-site evaluation requirement, and where editorial judgment enters the process.

Section 1

The five criteria and their weights

Every provider is assessed against the same five criteria. Weights reflect how much each factor affects a homeowner's long-term outcome, and they sum to exactly 100%.

1. Water Testing & Diagnostics

25%

Sizing a system without measuring the water is guesswork, so this criterion carries the most weight along with equipment. We assess:

  • Whether the provider tests the home's actual tap water before recommending equipment
  • What the test covers: hardness at minimum, plus iron and other common parameters where relevant
  • Whether results are explained in plain terms and whether testing is free of charge

2. Equipment Quality & Warranty

25%

The hardware has to hold up for years in a basement or garage. We assess:

  • Component quality, serviceability, and availability of replacement parts
  • Warranty length and what it actually covers, in writing
  • Whether the recommended unit is sized to the household rather than one-size-fits-all

3. Installation Workmanship

20%

A good softener installed badly is a bad softener. We assess:

  • Who performs the installation: the provider's own people or subcontractors
  • Plumbing workmanship, bypass configuration, and drain routing
  • Cleanliness of the finished work and walkthrough of the installed system

4. Service Responsiveness

15%

Softener problems tend to announce themselves at inconvenient times. We assess:

  • How easy it is to reach a human by phone
  • Typical scheduling horizon for service visits
  • Whether ongoing support comes from the same local operation that sold the system

5. Pricing Transparency

15%

We do not publish or compare prices; we rate how clearly each provider communicates its own. We assess:

  • Whether quotes are itemized and provided in writing
  • Whether the quote process is low-pressure and the numbers hold from quote to invoice
  • Clarity about what is and is not included: installation, salt, service, warranty

Weight distribution

The full 100% of the weighted score, segment by segment.

  • Water Testing & Diagnostics : 25%
  • Equipment Quality & Warranty : 25%
  • Installation Workmanship : 20%
  • Service Responsiveness : 15%
  • Pricing Transparency : 15%

25 + 25 + 20 + 15 + 15 = 100. Segment widths above are rendered at exactly these percentages.

Section 2

The 0-10 scoring scale

Each criterion is scored on the same 0-10 scale, in 0.1 increments, against a written checklist. The weighted total is the sum of each criterion score multiplied by its weight.

Definition of the 0-10 scoring bands
Band Label What it means
9.0 to 10.0 Exceptional Verified performance exceeds our benchmark on nearly every checklist item, with no material gaps.
8.0 to 8.9 Strong Exceeds the benchmark on most checklist items; any gaps are minor.
7.0 to 7.9 Good Meets the benchmark overall with a few identifiable areas for improvement.
5.0 to 6.9 Adequate Meets minimum expectations on the checklist; performance is acceptable but not distinguished.
0.0 to 4.9 Below benchmark Falls short of minimum expectations on one or more material checklist items.
Numeric 0-10 scores are assigned only after a completed on-site evaluation. Providers we have not yet evaluated on-site carry qualitative dot ratings instead: strong, adequate, or varies (used where performance depends on the individual dealer or location). To date, the only completed on-site evaluation in our St. Louis report is our top pick.
Section 3

Editorial judgment statement

Ratings are produced by the Water Softener Ratings editorial team. The criteria, weights, checklists, and scale bands on this page are fixed before any scoring begins, and the same framework is applied to every provider. Within that framework, individual criterion scores necessarily involve editorial judgment: two reviewers using the same checklist could land a few tenths apart, which is why we publish the framework rather than asking you to trust a bare number.

No provider can pay for a score, change a score, or preview a score before publication. This site features sponsored placements and may be compensated when you request a quote; that compensation supports the site and never enters the scoring process. Where we have not completed an on-site evaluation, we say so plainly and hold the numeric score rather than guessing.
