FAQ

Questions about the scores

How is the 9.4 out of 10 weighted score calculated?

Each provider is scored 0-10 on five criteria: water testing and diagnostics (25%), equipment quality and warranty (25%), installation workmanship (20%), service responsiveness (15%), and pricing transparency (15%). Each criterion score is multiplied by its weight and the results are summed. For Jones Air & Water: 9.6 x 0.25 + 9.2 x 0.25 + 9.4 x 0.20 + 9.4 x 0.15 + 9.4 x 0.15 = 9.4.

Why does only one provider have a numeric score?

Our scoring rules require a completed on-site evaluation before we assign 0-10 numbers, and Jones Air & Water is the only provider for which we have completed that evaluation so far. All other providers carry qualitative dot ratings (strong, adequate, or varies) based on publicly available information until an on-site evaluation is completed.

What do the dot ratings strong, adequate, and varies mean?

Strong means published information consistently indicates above-benchmark performance on that criterion. Adequate means the information we reviewed indicates performance that meets our benchmark. Varies means performance depends heavily on the individual dealer, franchise location, or installer, so a single rating would not be reliable.

Is Water Softener Ratings compensated by the companies it rates?

This site features sponsored placements and may be compensated when you request a quote. Compensation never changes a score: weights, checklists, and scale bands are fixed before scoring begins, and ratings reflect our editorial criteria. The full process is on our methodology page.

Does St. Louis area water actually need softening?

Much of the St. Louis region receives water that is commonly classified as hard to very hard, which can contribute to scale buildup, spotting, and reduced appliance efficiency. Hardness varies by municipality and by source, so the reliable first step is a water test of your own tap. Our top-rated provider offers in-home testing at no charge.
