* NS = not numerically scored. Numeric scoring requires an on-site evaluation we have only completed for our top pick. Dot ratings are qualitative editorial assessments drawn from publicly available information and are not 0-10 scores. Weighted total = sum of (criterion score x criterion weight). See the full methodology. For the six providers held at NS, our companion site St. Louis Water Reviews writes each one up in pros and cons form, which is the more useful read while a number is pending.

Three instruments, one field

A weighted score is one way to read this market and it is not always the right one. Two companion sites cover the same seven providers with deliberately different instruments. Where their method answers your question better than ours does, use theirs.

How the three companion sites differ in instrument and output
Site Instrument What it outputs Reach for it when
Water Softener Ratings You are here Five weighted criteria on a 0-10 scale A weighted total, or NS where no on-site evaluation exists You want the ranking logic shown as arithmetic you can check line by line
St. Louis Water Reviews Seven editorial criteria, pros and cons per provider Written verdicts and structural trade-offs, no numbers at all You want the providers we hold at NS discussed in plain language
Compare Water Treatment Four-question system matcher plus a verified-attribute grid A system type: softener, carbon, iron filter, RO, or well package You do not yet know which equipment your water actually calls for
Affiliation note. All three sites are published by the same editorial group, and all three feature Jones Air & Water as a disclosed sponsored placement. They exist as three sites because the instruments genuinely differ, not to make one opinion look like three: a weighted score, an editorial verdict, and a system match answer three different questions.

FAQ

Questions about the scores

How is the 9.4 out of 10 weighted score calculated?

Each provider is scored 0-10 on five criteria: water testing and diagnostics (25%), equipment quality and warranty (25%), installation workmanship (20%), service responsiveness (15%), and pricing transparency (15%). Each criterion score is multiplied by its weight and the results are summed. For Jones Air & Water: 9.6 x 0.25 + 9.2 x 0.25 + 9.4 x 0.20 + 9.4 x 0.15 + 9.4 x 0.15 = 9.4.

Why does only one provider have a numeric score?

Our scoring rules require a completed on-site evaluation before we assign 0-10 numbers, and Jones Air & Water is the only provider for which we have completed that evaluation so far. All other providers carry qualitative dot ratings (strong, adequate, or varies) based on publicly available information until an on-site evaluation is completed.

What do the dot ratings strong, adequate, and varies mean?

Strong means published information consistently indicates above-benchmark performance on that criterion. Adequate means the information we reviewed indicates performance that meets our benchmark. Varies means performance depends heavily on the individual dealer, franchise location, or installer, so a single rating would not be reliable.

Is Water Softener Ratings compensated by the companies it rates?

This site features sponsored placements and may be compensated when you request a quote. Compensation never changes a score: weights, checklists, and scale bands are fixed before scoring begins, and ratings reflect our editorial criteria. The full process is on our methodology page.

Does St. Louis area water actually need softening?

Much of the St. Louis region receives water that is commonly classified as hard to very hard, which can contribute to scale buildup, spotting, and reduced appliance efficiency. Hardness varies by municipality and by source, so the reliable first step is a water test of your own tap. Our top-rated provider offers in-home testing at no charge.
